How To Sow Grass Seed

1. It is critical the soil is well roto-tilled at least one inch deep. Ideally up to two inches is best.  Our small 2-cycle rotor- tillers are ideal to prepare the soil.
2. The type of seed is very important and the salesperson should advise on this. We recommend 2 to 4 #s per 1000 s q. ft. depending on the type of seed.  We must use a spreader for proper application.
3. Again it is important to fertilize the newly seeded area. We recommend using 6-24-24 and we must use a spreader for proper application. The recommended rate is #8 per 1,000 square feet
4. Once soil is prepared, seed and fertilizer applied, it is time to gently rake the “blend” into the soil. It is very important to do this and we must bury the seed  a quarter of an inch into the soil but not deeper.
5. Next we will cover the area with straw. This is critical for the success of the project. We recommend you cover the area well enough that you cannot see the soil whatsoever. Even in the shady areas we must use straw.
6. Lastly we will water the area well enough for the water to go about a quarter of an inch deep.

Supplies

Anderson’s Fertilizer

6-24-24 low nitrogen fertilizer

Information

It is important to use a low-nitrogen fertilizer for lawn renovation projects such as seeding and sodding. The low nitrogen helps to avoid burning the young, tender new growth. Using this starter fertilizer also stimulates root growth and sturdy blades, rather than fast, lush growth that will stress a new lawn with an immature root system. We sell our fertilizer in a 50 lb bag, which covers about 12,000 sq. ft.

Processed Top Soil

Information

Brown top soil. Pulverized and rock-free. Use this for establishing new beds, lawns, or foundations.

Straw By The Bale

$8.95 Per Bale

Information

Straw is a great tool for planting grass seed. Once the seeds are sown, cover them with straw so that they stay most during germination. Covering the seeds with straw also ensures that they won’t blow away.

Wasson Nursery Sod

Luscious Kentucky Bluegrass.

Our Bluegrass Sod is sold in rolls that are approximately 2 feet by 5 feet. These rolls are called a yard of sod because they are approximately 1 square yard in measurement.

How To

Keep your new sod, down to the soil underneath, constantly moist for 2-3 weeks; this will help promote root growth. You can check this by gently lifting the corner or edge of the sod – It should be dripping wet.  If the sod is allowed to dry out, it will become difficult to wet properly again which may cause it to shrink and leave gaps between the pieces. Gaps caused by shrinkage may not fill back in.

Light walking across the new sod can begin after one week. Allow at least 1 month before heavier traffic on your new sod. Typically, after three weeks you can start a regular mowing cycle. For the first few cuts, mow the sod a little higher than usual until it becomes established. Begin a fertilizing regimen after six weeks. Continue fertilizing into late fall to promote further root establishment and to help prevent stress and weeds. Like any other plant, disease and pests can affect your sod! Please call us if you have any questions or concerns and we will be happy to send one of our trained lawn experts out (for free!) to diagnose and help solve any problems you might be having.
