Turf 101: Why Apply A November Lawn Fertilizer

A November application of fertilizer is extremely important to keep all cool season turfs healthy and performing
as well as possible this fall and next year. Late fall Nitrogen promotes good root development (primarily in the spring), enhances storage of energy reserves this fall, and extends color retention this fall. Many benefits from late fall Nitrogen will be seen next spring and summer with earlier green up, improved density, and improved tolerance to diseases, heat, drought and other stresses. Apply near or after the last mowing of the year, but while grass is still green. Timing of this application is not overly critical because there may be a month or more between the last mowing and the time the grass turns brown or goes under snow cover. Generally the last weeks of October to the first few weeks of November are when to apply. The nitrogen must be taken up by the plant before winter to be effective in areas where the turf goes dormant during the winter.We reccommend a urea nitrogen water soluble fertilizer 46-0-0.
